COMPOUNDER

Salary range

£25-50,000

A Fragrance Compounder is responsible for blending and preparing fragrance formulations based on specific client requirements and fragrance briefs. They work closely with perfumers and technical teams to ensure that fragrance compositions are created accurately, efficiently, and consistently. The role involves measuring and mixing raw materials, ensuring that each batch meets quality standards and regulatory requirements. Candidates are generally expected to have a minimum of 4 GCSEs, with ideally a Science A-level.

EVALUATOR

Junior / Senior / Manager
Salary range

£28,000 – £80,000

An Evaluator works closely with the Perfumer to select which fragrances to submit to the client. The role needs expert understanding of the fragrance market, great smelling skills and strong project management ability. Candidates are generally expected to have a degree in Perfumery or a related Science field, often combined with additional specialised olfactory training.

FRAGRANCE DEVELOPMENT MANAGER

Senior / Manager / Director

£60,000 – £250,000

A Fragrance Development Manager is a key figure in guiding the fragrance creation process, working closely with cross-functional teams to bring client olfactory briefs to life. They translate marketing requirements into detailed olfactory briefs, ensuring that each fragrance aligns with the brand’s vision. Candidates are generally expected to have a degree, ideally in Marketing or Perfumery, along with specialised olfactory training and strong project management skills

FRAGRANCE TECHNICAL MANAGER

Manager / Director

£60,000 – £250,000

A Fragrance Technical Manager or Director is a scientist with strong chemistry and fragrance formulation experience who specialises in fragrance and how fragrance affects different formulations. They are focused on the technical, scientific, and regulatory aspects of fragrance formulation, ensuring that all technical specifications, regulatory requirements, and quality standards are met. Candidates are generally expected to have a Chemistry, Biochemistry, or a related scientific field, often with additional training or experience in perfumery.

GCMS ANALYST

Junior / Senior / Manager
Salary range

£26,000 – £60,000

A GCMS Analyst works on the GCMS machines, checking and matching components of a fragrance. Candidates are generally expected to have a minimum of 5 GCSEs, with ideally a Science A-level, and most will hold a degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, or Forensic Science.

TRAINEE PERFUMER

£28,000 – £45,000

A Trainee Perfumer is a highly creative individual with a passion for scent, learning to blend a variety of natural and synthetic aromas to create or replicate fragrances. Candidates are generally expected to have a minimum of 4 GCSEs, ideally a Science A-level, and a degree in Perfumery or a related scientific field.

CREATIVE PERFUMER

Junior / Senior / Manager / Director

£45,000 – £400,000

A Creative Perfumer, Chief Perfumer or Master Perfumer is highly creative and passionate. They blend all the different aromas and chemicals to create a fragrance. Often known as ‘The Nose’, they are primarily focused on the artistic and imaginative side of fragrance creation. They are the “artists” of the perfume world, blending raw materials to develop their unique creations. Candidates are generally expected to have 5 GCSEs minimum, ideally a Science A level, Perfumery or Science degree and training for a number of years.

TECHNICAL PERFUMER

£45,000 – £200,000

A Technical Perfumer is a highly skilled professional with a deep understanding of fragrance formulation and chemistry. They are responsible for adapting and refining fragrance compositions, ensuring that they meet both creative and technical requirements. With a focus on stability, performance, and regulatory compliance, they address ingredient challenges and work to maintain the integrity of each fragrance. Candidates are generally expected to have a degree a Perfumery or Science Degree (Chemistry, Biochemistry or related), along with specialised training in perfumery and several years of hands-on experience.
