You don’t want to make any moves too soon. There are five things you MUST consider before quitting your job.


1. Have you served in that job for two years?

Usually, it takes a few months of on-the-job training to fully understand the position and what’s expected of you. You have to realize that you’re *probably* not going to be automatically good at your job the second you waltz in the door. That’s why it’s important to give yourself some time to hone your new skills and really provide value to the company before your can market those new skills toward another job. Don’t sell yourself short by leaving your job before you’ve had a chance to be awesome at it.

2. Do you have the right experience?

Before you quit your job, you need to make sure you’ve built up enough experience so you can effectively market yourself for another role. You may need to stay a little longer so you can build that credibility and really hone those skills (as mentioned in the point above). By doing this, you’ll have a better shot of getting that job you really want.

3. Are you overworked?

If you feel like you’re falling behind at work, which is causing you insane amounts of stress, it might be time to “reclaim” the job, as J.T. O’Donnell, founder and CEO of CAREEREALISM.com says. You need to constantly find ways to upskill and make yourself better. The more you know, the easier it will be for you to keep up (even get ahead!) at work. Try taking an online class, attending a workshop, or even watching a webinar to help you learn more about your area of expertise and keep up with trends.

4. Have you tried to energize the role, or take it to the next level?

Feel like you’re not challenged anymore at work? Or that there’s nothing new you can learn or contribute to the company? It might be time to step up and ASK for more responsibilities. Find new ways to challenge yourself at work. It might even result in a promotion.

5. Is there something else going on?

It’s not uncommon for people to blame their stress on work when it’s actually the result of something happening OUTSIDE of work. If you’re having relationship, health, family, or financial issues, that stress can actually carry over into your work. So, even if you did quit your job, that stress might carry over to the next job. Before you quit, take a good look at your personal life.
