If you work in an area where you are privy to sensitive information, keep it to yourself.

4. Please the Boss

Aim to please the person who pays your salary not your colleagues…your boss will promote you not your co-workers. Seek feedback, listen to advice and work on it.

Think of the issues and problems your boss or company is having, outside of your regular role, can you solve any of them, either on your own or with the help of the team.

5. Clock Watching, Time Management & Organisation

No truly successful man or woman followed the 9-5 mentality; clock watchers never get promoted or reach great heights, go the extra mile, do more than is expected

Work on the most important or critical tasks each day, don’t leave things to the last minute and work on improving yourself and growing your network outside of working hours.

Keep you work area clean and tidy, make sure you can get to everything you need quickly, follow a pattern, organising and listing everything in a structured manner, grouping files into folders to keep tasks together.

6. Finish Strong

Make sure you complete tasks and finish strong, if someone has asked you to do something it’s important and needs to be done. Don’t stop and start tasks, keep smiling and crack on, think of the long-term goal not just the immediate task, complete it then move on.

7. All for One and One for All

No one can do it alone, no company can achieve success without a spirit of teamwork and cooperation, everyone working together for a common goal. A team is only as strong as its weakest player, spend time and effort to help everyone grow.

Cultivate a cooperative mentality, sacrifice your own time and effort for the good of the whole, learn to take direction and to delegate.

8. Take a Risk

We generally learn more from our failures than our successes. Business moves and changes, we must be prepared to take a few risks.

Do the research, come up with the facts to support the risk, have conviction that your idea will work but accept that if it doesn’t you will learn from it and move on.

9. Have a Goal

If you don’t know where you are going how will you know when you have got there? Create a vision and move towards it, focus on the short and long-term goals every day and remember it’s not all about money, think about what is really important to you.

10. Respect Yourself & Others

Respect yourself and others, life is not a constant competition, there will always be someone better, stronger, richer, faster… Work hard, learn, grow and respect yourself for who you are and show respect to all around you.

Treat other people how you want to be treated, help other people achieve success, stay strong and true and you will be supported by the people who have helped you climb the career ladder.
