Scrub up on Science Challenge Final 2019
Scrub up on Science Challenge Final 2019
18 June 2019 at London Zoo
The Scrub Up On Science challenge is an annual competition for teams of two to four students aged 11 to 16. Created by the Society of Cosmetic Scientists, it brings the chemistry curriculum to life, as the students apply what they’ve learnt in class to a real life challenge. The teams are tasked with developing the concept for a bath bomb or bubble bath and then providing proof that their concept works.
This year’s finalists really rose to the challenge, not only creating a new bath bomb or bubble bath product, but coming up with a fun, inventive name and even considering how to market it as a product to consumers.
The 2019 finalists were:
- Central Lancaster High School
- Consett Academy
- East London Science School
- The National Mathematics & Science College
- Streatham & Clapham High School
- Robert Bloomfield Academy
Huge congratulations to this year’s winner:
Team Eclipse from East London Science School, Year 10
Team Eclipse investigated the effervescence of a bath bomb using different amounts of citric acid and bicarbonate of soda. Using milk powder as the bath bomb base, they created a unique formulation that not only fizzed in the water, but left bubbles in the bath and had a smooth and soft feel on the skin. Their impressive knowledge and innovative thinking saw them edge ahead of the other finalists in the fifth SUOS annual competition.
